dehydration can be defined as a significant loss of fluids that causes impairment to regular body functions.
being dehydrated isn’t fun. in fact, in some instances dehydration can be quite fatal. we can feel off from our normal personality or even a little wack or more tired from not having the amount of water we need.
whenever i first started writing a “blog” i gave myself a platform for which i could write about the things i struggle with and am going through in order to learn more about it to conquer it. in fact, i’ll admit it- dehydration is something i struggle with on a week to week basis. often i see more drinks with flavor to choose from and instead of finishing my water bottle, i take a sip from a much more “tasteful” beverage. it kinda stinks because during the day i never notice it, but once i get in the pool to swim it’s obvious. i’m more tired, a little delirious, and i get headaches. some days i can’t even swim.
being dehydrated i realized, does not just apply physically though- it definitely can apply spiritually. if we don’t “hydrate” ourselves with the word and Jesus we begin to suffer from the same dehydration symptoms. by having a lack of our spiritual resources it causes impairment to our bodily functions of the mind, heart, and our mood. sometimes even our whole life feels a little off because we haven’t supplied ourselves with the things we need.
things start to seem more appealing than doing a devotion at night or in the morning. playing xbox or being on our phones seems more entertaining than reading our Bible for a few minutes. soon we are right in the habit of missing these essential things and lacking that spiritual fulfillment. boom dehydrated.
it’s so easy to loose sight of the big picture. in a soccer game, we want to play right now instead of getting subbed out for a water break; however without that period of rest, how are you supposed to achieve your best ability for the last few minutes of the game when your team needs you? it’s hard for me to look at a gatorade and remember i really need to drink the water bottle i haven’t touched yet, first. by not filling ourselves with the word of God we aren’t able to preform at our best or thrive as christians. we begin to slowly stray off the path and into things that we think will satisfy our thirst. people, our phones, relationships, television... just like there is no “substitute” for water there is no substitute comparable to God and His word.
i get it. we’re busy. we have so much overwhelming mess going on it’s hard to find time to spend time with Jesus. buttttt- no matter what you face in life, nothing can quench your thirst in life but Jesus. He is everything in this world you could ever imagine. He’s nothing close to flavorless water; because in John He describes His love as living water. a water that won’t cause you to thirst continuously, but will satisfy your needs.
so don’t fret. don’t worry. instead of freaking out about dehydration, hydrate yourself by making the most of the time you have. use those spiritual resources to build your love for the provider of a stream that never runs dry. His love is always there ready to fill you up.
“But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”” (John 4:14)
